Though-provoking discussions, stellar performances, and a whole lotta love. The free virtual Bi-Fi Festival has everything you need to enjoy your true colors.
On September 23, 1990, over 450 people gathered in San Francisco to discuss the civil rights and visibility of the bisexual community. On that day, the mayor of the city commended “the bisexual rights community for its leadership in the cause of social justice,” marking the date as Celebrate Bisexuality Day.
The occurrence was first celebrated on September 23, 1999, thanks to three American activists: Gigi Raven Wilbur, Michael Page, and Wendy Curry. Although this observance is not new, it is of crucial importance to remind everyone of its existence: Even if many identities in the LGBT community are being represented and acknowledged more around the world, the bisexual folks keep facing stigma – both in and outside the LGBT circles.
But Bi-Pride UK, a British charity that creates safe spaces for people who feel attracted to both sexes and beyond gender, won’t let the pandemic stop the discussion around the serious issues of bi-visibility, bi-erasure, and bi-phobia. So although Bisexual Pride Day is usually celebrated in September, this year, the organization will hold an online Bi-Fi Festival during Pride Month.
“It’s not enough to be ‘welcome’ at a Pride,” says the Bi-Pride UK’s website. “We make up a very large proportion of the GRSD or Gender, Romantic and Sexual Diversity community, and we deserve to be visible and celebrated in our own right.”
The final schedule of the one-day event that will take place on June 20 has not been announced yet, but the organizers promise to bring you “thought-provoking discussion panels and entertainment from a diverse array of performers.” All segments of the happening will broadcast via Twitch and culminate with a DJ’ed after party.
At Bi-Fi Festival, folks and anyone who falls in between the homosexual spectrum can be visible and honor themselves and their sexual identities. “Between ‘gay’ and ‘straight’ there are so many shades of attraction beyond gender. We seek to create spaces for anyone who falls into that spectrum or thinks that they might.”
