From the trance-inducing melodies of forest psy to the violent trash metal sounds, Every Noise at Once puts all facets of music at your fingertips.
Hundreds of genres inhabit our current musical universe. If in the past the only way to get your ears onto something were radio broadcasts, the internet undoubtedly helped with the proliferation of some of the most popular ones at the moment, providing us with an incredible breadth of choice.
Still, not everyone has mainstream tastes. If that’s your case, you probably don’t enjoy being musically spoon-fed, and building your sound library is more of an investigative process. Whether your playlist is starting to bore you, your vinyl collection is becoming severely stale or you’re just looking for something new to listen to, Every Noise at Once is a perfect companion for such musical explorations.
A brainchild of Glenn McDonald, an engineer from The Echo Nest, which is a musical data platform used by media companies, the free-to-use website helps people discover hundreds of music genres, from the obvious and well-known to the most enigmatic and abstruse. Every Noise at Once packs an incredibly vast collection of musical snippets, and by clicking on the selected genre, you will hear a 30-second sample.
If you like what you hear, you can click on a small arrow on the genre label’s right. This will redirect you to a list of artists that fall under that category and will offer you previews of their work. Then, when you decide to dive further into the genre, various options on top of the page will guide you to specific Spotify playlists. You can even look up your favorite artists and figure out where they fall in the musical spectrum.
“Every Noise at Once is an incredibly simple, deep way to explore all of music, as well as searching for bands to find out where they fall, and exploring the additional genre maps to see what bands in each genre sound like, from happy hardcore to indie pop and beyond,” says the website. Needless to say, the rhythmic complexities of instrumental math rock or trance-inducing sounds of forest psy promise weeks of an interesting sensory experience.
